Nosferatu (The Vampyre)

"Nosferatu (The Vampyre)", 2014

24" x 20", oil on canvas

My latest painting was inspired by the film, "Nosferatu the Vampyre", Werner Herzog's 1979 remake of the old silent film by F. W. Murnau. It stars Klaus Kinski the depraved count, who decides he wants to relocate from his Transylvanian Castle to house on the Baltic Sea. For the most part Director Herzog tried hard to follow the plot of the original 1922 film, but there were differences, such as filming locations. Instead of filming at Castle Orava in Slovakia like in the original, Herzog used shots of a castle ruin to represent the exterior, because as the gypsies warned Harker, "The castle only exists in the minds of men. It is just a ruin, a ghost castle." The interior shots of the "ghost castle" were filmed at Castle Pernštejn in the Czech Republic.

Here is a scene from inside Castle Pernštejn.

And here are some photos I made on a trip to Pernštejn some years ago.

Besides location differences, some scenes were added by Herzog that were not in the original, such as the one below.

Anyway, a great film whether you like Herzog films, or vampires movies, or both.

Emča of Prague

Here is a portrait I did of a little Bichon Frise. The dog's name is Emily or Emča. Emily and her mommy live in Prague. I painted a silhouette of the "golden city" behind her. And yes, I know that St. Vitus Cathedral is not next to the Church of Our Lady Before Týn. The two Prague landmarks are on opposite sides of the Vltava from each other, but aesthetically it works. Even if painting little white dogs from poor photographs doesn't.

Now, how many stamps is it gonna take to mail this to Prague? Hmm...

Skull and Pitcher

Here is a copy of Picasso's "Skull and Pitcher" I did for my dining area. Bright warm primary colors contrast strongly with a table set with a large colorful pitcher, and sadness and death.

And here is the original painted in 1945. I didn't lay on my paint nearly as thickly or quickly as the Spanish master.

Mandrake versus the Snake

I got it on the canvas for posterity. I did. Actually I captured it on a cradled panel instead of canvas. But canvas sounds closer to camera, and "Mandrake versus the snake. I got it on the camera for posterity." are lines from the song "Platform Blues" by the band Pavement, which is where I got the idea for my latest painting. The painting is my submission for Howl Gallery's upcoming bird and snake themed show, called simply, "Bird and Snake Group Show". I used to listen a lot of Pavement when I painted. I still do I guess.

When he wrote the lyrics I'm not sure if Stephen Malkmus was thinking of that old comic character, Mandrake the Magician, or the mandrake or mandragora plant, the root of which often resembles a human figure and has been used in magic rituals for centuries. But anyway, in my painting it is a scrappy little mandrake root, which is battling "the snake", which in this case happens to be a large venomous asp.

And here is the song "Platform Blues". Listen for it at 2:17.

Rachael (Blade Runner)

Here is the first in a short series of portraits of characters from the film Blade Runner. It's the replicant who didn't know she was a replicant, Rachael.

I really like painting portraits on these oval canvases, but I always feel I have to photoshop a frame and background around them. Below is a detail of the painting.

"You know that Voigt-Kampff test of yours? Did you ever take that test yourself?"
